Understanding The NFL Playing Surface Standards And What It Means For Your Program

In December 2025, The NFL introduced new mandatory practices for the selection and maintenance of playing surfaces used for National Football League (NFL) games and practices. The new playing surface standards were developed and approved by the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Joint Field Surface Safety and Performance Committee, and evaluate surfaces using three primary metrics: impact, traction, and infill consistency. The program is a system design engineering benchmark to guide innovation and improve consistency across products used in the league.

The policy will apply to any teams that plan to replace their surfaces for the 2026 season. By the 2028 season, all stadiums and practice facilities will be required to have “approved” surfaces, whether they are grass, synthetic, or hybrid.

FieldTurf System Design

Understanding the New NFL Surface Standard

With a focus on the relationship between player and surface, each product is evaluated against three mechanical metrics to ensure consistency across every stadium: impact, traction, and infill depth. The testing protocol uses two key testing devices that are exclusive to the NFL:

The BEAST

  • Description: Traction testing device that replicates the movements of an NFL player
  • Test Criteria: Peak torque ≤ 180 Nm (rotational traction)

The test records peak rotational traction results measured across ten locations. The unit uses a typical NFL cleat-form to apply vertical loads to the surface consistent with the those applied by NFL players during play. To evaluate traction, the device uses a hydraulic piston to apply sufficiently strong translational and rotational forces to the cleat-form to create slippage at the cleat-surface interface. The loads observed during slipping describe the load-bearing capacity of that interface.

The STRIKE

  • Description: Impact tester that helps determine the firmness of each field
  • Test Criteria: 45 g ≤ Peak g ≤ 90 g

The goal of surface impact testing is to ensure an appropriate surface hardness for NFL play. Impact testing for NFL playing surfaces focuses on how NFL players interact with the surface during play and is designed to mimic specific cleat-surface engagement conditions.

Submitted products are tested at an official certification event and reviewed by the NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Joint Field Surface Safety and Performance Committee. Approved systems obtain an official certification and are allowed to be installed at NFL stadiums and practice facilities

Testing Results: FieldTurf Systems

FieldTurf is already trusted by 11 NFL teams across the league, including both Super Bowl LX’s finalists, the New England Patriots (Gillette Stadium) and Seattle Seahawks (Lumen Field).

  • BEAST: PASSED - FieldTurf’s results closely align to the NFL laboratory natural grass corridor shown in black, indicating traction behavior of FieldTurf systems comparable to natural grass used in the NFL.

  • STRIKE: PASSED - FieldTurf recorded Peak g values within the NFL-NFLPA required range of 45g to 90g at every test location.

  • Be specific on the system specifications: Infill weight (Min of 6 lbs. Per sq.ft.) and stitch gauge (¾") makes a difference
