We can all breathe a sigh of relief after a tension packed 90 minutes, and American fans can enjoy the USA vs Germany result, which ended in a 1-0 loss. Why celebrate a loss, you ask?
Typically a loss would produce a negative feeling, but today soccer fans were ready to celebrate that score line. With the other two teams in our group, Portugal and Ghana, playing simultaneously with us, the 2-1 victory for Portugal assured the US another game, due to goal differential. The results for our group: Germany finished first in the group with 7 points, USA 4 points, Portugal 4 points, and Ghana 1 point. The US is now one of 16 teams passing to the second round.
The USA played a pretty solid game against a very strong and confident German team. Germany started the game with a lot of possession, short passes and solid attacks, but the US was up to the challenge. The US was again tough to beat up the middle, and dangerous on a few of their counter attacks. The one goal we allowed, was off of a corner kick. The German’s, always strong in the air, produced a clear header that our keeper Tim Howard saved.
Unfortunately, the rebound went to the top of the box where Thomas Müller’s shot found the far corner of the net. A clinical finish by one of the best players in the tournament. Over all, the US team had a solid showing in all three games. Along with the usual team organization, team spirit, and never say die attitude, all qualities that have been a part of this National team for the last 24 years, this US team continues to build off of a solid foundation that has been established over many years.
Now we head into the knock-out stage of the World Cup, the second round. We will play the very young and dangerous attacking team of Belgium on Tuesday July 1st. Anything can happen. The whole country again will be watching, waiting and hoping for a win. But as we have seen, the unpredictability of this World Cup has created some of the best drama the soccer world has ever experienced.
