With six teams in the Top 25, including #1 Texas, FieldTurf is the leading surface provider in college football
Each year, the end of summer is accompanied by an event that is just as highly anticipated—the start of college football season. As is the case every year, FieldTurf artificial turf continues to be trusted at home stadiums and practice fields across the country, many belonging to top teams favored for championship glory.
Last year, the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff featured four FieldTurf teams (i.e., Notre Dame, Texas, Oregon, and Boise State), highlighting the presence of our leading surfacing solutions among elite college football programs. The semifinals featured two FieldTurf teams, Texas and Notre Dame, with the latter advancing to the CFP Championship.
From the start, 2025 promises to be another exciting season, with six teams that use FieldTurf on their home fields listed in the AP Top 25: Texas (1), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Illinois (12), Michigan (14), and Boise State (25). These schools also represent more than half of the AP Top 25 teams that play their home games on artificial turf.
Fortunately, significant college football storylines on FieldTurf are not just limited to rankings, as new programs and facilities adopt our game-changing surface solutions each year. Similarly, every off-season also provides opportunities to renew relationships with programs that have trusted FieldTurf for years. This results in many field replacements and upgrades as schools continue to emphasize performance and player safety—two areas where FieldTurf is a proven leader—when choosing new turf systems.
Ahead of this season, we’ve been exceptionally proud to install new surfaces at Georgia Tech (Bobby Dodd Stadium), West Virginia University (Mountaineer Field), the University of Toledo (Glass Bowl Stadium), and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium), among others.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is one of our favorite stories of the year. It marks a historic return for the school, which hasn’t participated in a college football season since 1951. In addition to being trusted on its home field, UTRGV also uses FieldTurf at its 45,000-plus-square-foot Vaqueros Performance Center (VPC).
The VPC project, which was completed in 2024, highlights the important role of FieldTurf surfaces at the practice facilities of other top programs. This off-season saw the installation of new artificial turf at numerous facilities, including, but not limited to: Notre Dame (LaBar Practice Complex), West Virginia University (Steve Antoline Family Football Practice Field), Utah State University (Stan Laub Athletic Training Center), Coastal Carolina (Indoor Practice Facility), and Montana State University (Kennedy-Stark Athletic Center).
The latter two projects—Coastal Carolina and Montana State—are both new facilities that were recently unveiled to the public. These state-of-the-art initiatives are key examples of FieldTurf continuing to be a leading choice for institutions making significant investments in athletic resources supporting a wide range of student-athletes.
As the new football season gets underway and the country’s top teams begin their championship runs, history will undoubtedly be made on FieldTurf—the only question is by which teams and on what fields.
