Meet the field at Super Bowl LIII

Super Bowl LIII will be played at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the most recent NFL stadium to open and latest to install FieldTurf.

The facility showcases FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 system, perfectly named after the concept of completeness for its optimal durability, versatility and resilience. Installed in 2017, the field covers nearly 107,000 square feet of surface space.

Here are a few things you might not know about the playing field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:

  • There are over 700 million fibers in the field
  • The fibers measure 2.5” in height
  • The field’s infill weighs over 900,000 lbs.
    • 600,000 lbs. of sand
    • 300,000 lbs. of cryogenic rubber
  • The field was manufactured locally in Calhoun, Georgia, a 90-minute drive from the stadium
  • Unlike most FieldTurf installations, the field is “all-green” and lines / logos are painted to allow the professional football and soccer teams to share the facility.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United FC, winner of the MLS Cup 2018. The venue also hosted college football’s Peach Bowl, Celebration Bowl and Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

FieldTurf in the Super Bowl

Super Bowl LIII will be the third Super Bowl played on FieldTurf. The others were Super Bowls XLVI (Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis) and XL (Ford Field in Detroit).

While the Rams play on grass at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Patriots — making a record 11th Super Bowl appearance — are no strangers to FieldTurf. The company’s relationship with New England dates back to 2004, when the surface was installed at the team’s indoor practice facility. Two years later, the Patriots installed FieldTurf at Gillette Stadium, and the surface has been part of New England’s historic run ever since.

FieldTurf in the NFL

In 2015, an SI.com ranking of the National Football League’s best and worst fields revealed that FieldTurf provides the best artificial surface in the NFL.

All told, FieldTurf is installed at 10 of the NFL’s 32 teams to provide superior high-performance surfaces with long-term durability and increased reliability. Here is the list of current FieldTurf installations in the NFL:

  • Atlanta Falcons: Mercedes-Benz Stadium & Practice Facility
  • Detroit Lions: Ford Field & Practice Facility
  • New England Patriots: Gillette Stadium & Practice Facility
  • Seattle Seahawks: CenturyLink Field & Practice Facility
  • Green Bay Packers – Practice Facility
  • New York Giants – Practice Facility
  • Oakland Raiders – Practice Facility
  • Philadelphia Eagles – Practice Facility
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Practice Facility
  • Washington Redskins – Practice Facility

Make sure you tune in to watch Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, February 3rd at 6:30 P.M. EST
