Beynon Sports & FieldTurf Team Up to Anchor New Saddleback College Sports Complex

With the intention of hosting NCAA and USA Track and Field meets, as well as local and state high school football and soccer games, the Saddleback College Sports Complex will open this fall in Mission Viejo, Calif. Anchored by a nine-lane Beynon BSS 2000 embedded-texture track with two D-zones, plus four FieldTurf Revolution 360 fields (one stadium field, one soccer field and two practice fields), the $55 million complex also is under consideration to be a practice facility for the 2028 Summer Olympics in nearby Los Angeles.

Beynon’s BSS 2000 features a force-reduction layer of high-performance butyl rubber and full-depth Beynon Red polyurethane with Gold passing relay zones and runways. The adjacent throwers park consists of contrasting colors to delineate two javelin runways and a space for shot, discus and hammer throws.

FieldTurf’s Revolution 360, named after the concept of completeness, boasts optimal durability, resilience and feel. A small area dedicated to football sled work is located next to the practice fields and features FieldTurf’s Classic HD surface, which is designed and crafted to maximize durability and safety while also emphasizing aesthetic appeal.

The focal point of the community college’s new complex is the 8,000-seat stadium, which replaces a 3,800-seat stadium built in 1976. The facility will continue Saddelback College’s rich athletic history. Over the past half-century, Gauchos teams have captured more than 163 Orange Empire Conference titles, 45 Southern California Regional titles, 25 state championships and three national championships.

Beynon surfaces are in place at some of North America’s most prestigious track and field venues, as well as at college campuses, high schools, and city parks where safety, speed, competition and daily training take high priority. BSS 2000 surfaces are installed at NCAA Division I universities, including the University of Alabama, University of Arizona and University of Washington. All told, Beynon boasts more than 2,500 installations on the continent over the past 10 years.

FieldTurf has installed more than 3,000 fields that have lasted for eight years or longer, thanks to quality fiber and heavyweight infill. FieldTurf’s fibers are produced at Tarkett Sports’ manufacturing facility in Germany with a quality-control process that includes stringent testing of yarn properties — including tensile strength, uniformity and color verification. Additionally, FieldTurf’s infill contains the most pounds of material per square foot of any product available, and the company’s heavyweight system reduces the amount of maintenance required while also protecting turf fibers and maintaining safety and performance standards.
