Big in Texas: FieldTurf & Beynon Embark on Eight-Field, Four-Track Project for Abilene ISD

Work has begun on a $12 million turf and track project in the Abilene (Texas) Independent School District — one of the biggest sports construction projects in the state this spring.

Plans include replacing the existing FieldTurf synthetic football field at 60-year-old P.E. Shotwell Stadium, as well as installing three additional FieldTurf football fields in the district. FieldTurf is also planned to install two new synthetic turf baseball infields and two new synthetic turf softball infields at two district high schools.

Additionally, the Shotwell Stadium annex and three middle schools will receive new running track surfaces by Beynon Sports.

This massive project is the second in a series of major capital-improvements initiatives that are part of a voter-approved $138.7 million bond. It also extends FieldTurf’s long-term relationship with Abilene ISD, which dates back to 2011, when Shotwell Stadium became one of the first high school venues in the state to install FieldTurf’s Revolution surface.

By combining fields and tracks in one major project package, Abilene ISD is leveraging the combined strengths of FieldTurf and Beynon — leaders in turf & track surfacing in the U.S.

In Texas, FieldTurf and Beynon are trusted by over 400 programs, of which includes Abilene Christian University, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, University of Texas, Texas Christian University, University of Houston, University of Texas at El Paso and the University of North Texas to name a few.

The new Abilene ISD football fields will feature FieldTur’s Vertex Prime (Shotwell Stadium) and Vertex systems (Abilene High School, Cooper High School, Shotwell Annex), both comprised of specially designed slit-film fibers and high-performance ridged monofilament fibers to emphasize safety, grass-like play and a superior aesthetic appearance.

The infields will feature FieldTurf’s DoublePlay XT system, a leading baseball & softball product at the high school level.

The eight-lane track at the Shotwell Annex will be surfaced with Beynon’s BSS 300 system, a dual-durometer sandwich product that features paved-in-place polyurethane topped with a two-component seal coat and finished with a layer of two-component polyurethane.

The four-lane tracks at three middle schools will be surfaced with Beynon’s BSS 100 system, which are paved-in-place surfaces with a single-compound polyurethane binder and rubber granules, finished with multiple coating sprays.

Construction began this spring on the football fields, which are expected to be ready for action in August. The two infields should be completed in September, with the tracks slated for installation in 2020.
