Fans will notice a new playing surface inside TDECU Stadium during the upcoming 2020 season.
The project, being completed by FieldTurf, is scheduled to conclude on Feb. 6. The first official use on the new turf will take place on Feb. 8 as the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks open their season against the Los Angeles Wildcats.
With installation already underway, the new FieldTurf will be customizable in a variety of ways, allowing Houston to create unique field designs for each home football game.
“This is an important project for us," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "This is a commitment to the safety of our student-athletes first and foremost, but it also allows us to display our brand and our connection to the city of Houston in a variety of ways. It will also give us the opportunity to continue to use our facilities for special events, specifically with our partnership with the XFL. Our collaboration with the XFL helped make this upgrade possible and is another step toward improving our gameday experience inside TDECU Stadium.”
TDECU Stadium will now feature a dark green surface of FieldTurf, which is comparable to the playing fields used by the New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons in their home venues.
The new field will showcases FieldTurf’s Classic HD slit-film fiber which combines the durability of slit-film yarns with an upgraded production process to deliver the perfect combination of durability and softness.
Fans will also notice new endzones designs, while the markings honoring 1989 Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, John O’Quinn Field and TDECU Stadium will remain on the playing surface.
The new surface will also allow Houston Athletics to host a variety of special events at TDECU Stadium in the future.
This replacement process removes the existing turf surface that was originally installed when TDECU Stadium opened in 2014.
